How to Make a Baby Cape

If you have a baby or toddler, make sure to add a cape to his or her wardrobe. You can sew a fabric sewn cape yourself or use a pattern. But no matter which method you choose, it’s important to keep your child safe. For this reason, you should ensure that you use a safe neck attachment.

To start, choose the right size fabric for your baby cape. The fabric should be at least 30 inches by 35 inches (or a little over 5 inches by 8 inches) in size. It should also be wide enough to accommodate the front and back openings. Once you’ve chosen your material, cut it in half to make a rectangle. You should also measure the width and height of the fabric.

Next, mark a pattern on the fabric. This is the easiest way to determine the shape of the U-shaped neck tie. Measure and cut two pieces of the same fabric and one piece of lining fabric. Sew the lining onto the outer fabric, leaving a few inches open for turning. Also, stitch the hood fabric to the cape, with a seam allowance of at least 1 cm. Make sure to pin the edges together.

Next, cut a piece of coordinating solid cotton fabric into a 2.5″ x 16″ strip. Use this piece as a band for the cape. You can also use this to tie the knots in the ends of the cording. You can even make a ribbon with a gold or silver cording. Or, you could add a feather boa to the bottom of the cape.

For an added touch, you can add a magnet to the inside of the cape. However, you should be careful to place the magnets so that they are positioned in the correct position. Alternatively, you can protect them with cardboard.

Now, the other thing to do is cut a hole in the cape. You can make a nice, large one for the center front of the cape. Otherwise, cut a few small ones around the edges. Another option is to cut a number of holes into the bottom and hem the edges.

If you want to give the cape a little extra pizazz, you can use fusible web interfacing to add appliques or designs. A great way to do this is to use a fabric stencil. You can also attach sequins with felt glue. Finally, you can add a zig zag stitch to the raw edge.

As for the pins, you can use tacky glue, a safety pin, or a magnet. Using a magnet may tack to your sewing machine. When putting the magnet in place, you should use a thick cloth or paper to help protect the magnet from scratching the surface of your sewing machine.

For a fun and easy way to embellish your cape, you can also use iron-on transfers. Or, you can glue rhinestones on. You can make a matching mask to go with your cape.
